VPN.How,what, where ?Find one that fits your needs
What is VPN?Vpn is simply just connection that allow u to change your home connection ip,encrypt your incoming and outgoing traffic and u don't need tons of programs for doing all that, one vpn connection is enough. There is allot of reasons why people use vpn.Why do they need to use other ip instead of their ISP assigned one,why do they need to encrypt traffic, there is allot reasons. For example some people want to access some sites that are restricted by their ISP,or they just don't want anyone to sniff their traffic or simple they don't want to leave their ip anywhere on internet. There is allot of reasons why people use them but is not
subject of this tutorial so we won't discuss it here
Types of vpns
We can sort vpns in two main categories if we are looking based on that do they need additional software for connection of just windows. So we have clientless and those with clients.Clientless ones are mainly called „windows vpn“.This type of vpn contains only username, password and hostname or the ip of the server where u are connecting.U have to make new connection in new connection wizard and follow the instructions .Its pretty simple so i think there is no point on explaining basic process of it,however i would like to mention that there can be some options required by your Vpn provider so i suggest u to check is there section on site on how to setup VPN.If not than probably there is nothing special to setup just basic options.Windows vpn are rare if u are looking for free ones mostly they are payed services,so i don't have any to recommend here.
Second ones are VPNs with clients software, vpns where u are required to download VPN software from the provider site and install on your pc and later u are connecting via that software with your username and password.Note that there is no need to input host ip anywhere on the software because its built inside. This kind of vpn also we can find as free ones and payed ones but i have found more free ones from this category than from windows vpn. Most famous from this category is called cyberghost vpn and its free for use
There is also one that i think its better to put in client ones section although its not classical cliented vpn but more open source.Open vpn!its open source software used by many vpn providers and also available for u to setup on your servers for free to make your own vpn. When downloading this kind of vpn u will be asked to download Open vpn client from its official site (u will find a link on providers site to download link of open vpn) and as second file u will have to download configuration file for it made by your vpn provider.
Some vpn providers that use open vpn have already packed installations containing open vpn client and configuration file but most of them doesn't since there is a possibility that new version of open vpn client will came out in mean time
Now based on type of the servers they use u have vpns that connect to one server and your whole traffic goes though it,and vpns like peer2me which is something like peer2peer service.
Final notes:
Now after u know what are vpns and how to setup and use them u probably want to get one for yourself so here are some tips for finding vpn that will fit your needs
First think about what u actually want do,u want your ip hidden so u can access restricted sites,or u are doing some private things and u don't want your traffic to be sniffed and decrypted. If u want only to hide your ip any vpn will do it good so don't bother to search for long time just grab the first one that is easy to use.In other case if u want to encrypt your traffic do a little longer search and check what encryption different providers give,do they keep logs of the connections u made(most of them do because of people doing illegal things over vpns)if they do for how long they are holding logs.Week, month, year?
Also no matter for what use u need your vpn there are some general things to look on.First are u willing to pay for vpn if yes how much, also check what is the speed of the vpn,how much traffic per month they allow and other specifications depending of are u looking for something special
